Funeral Home Upgrade

Funeral Home Upgrade
  • Location : Wiri, Manukau
  • Council : Auckland

Due to the increase demand from customers to hold after funeral functions Lot 1 was bought for that purpose to extend the operation.

This funeral home was established to cater for all nationalities, however, 90% of the families utilising our services are Indians and their performing of rituals are a lot different from other races. Normally when someone passes away prayers are conducted at their home before the deceased is brought to the funeral home for memorial service and cremation or burial. It is a fact that a lot of older people are now staying in rest homes and as such they do need a place to perform the prayers. Also many people live in smaller units where it is not possible to conduct such prayers. Currently for prayers we are using our dressing room which is next to the mortuary and is not very inconvenient as bodies are being embalmed at the same time and the noise coming out of Embalming machine distracts the families. Also the smell of the chemical is not very pleasant.

The design of buildings in the Commercial Zone can adversely affect character and amenity both within the zone and in the surrounding environment. There is the potential for new developments to positively interact with and enhance the community’s relationship the surrounding environment; Noise from activities within the Commercial Zone can adversely affect the amenity values of occupants in neighbouring buildings and zones; and Signs can play an important role in creating a vibrant commercial area; however the quality of signs, particularly due to design, appearance, and lack of maintenance can have adverse visual effects on character and amenity.

Limited Notification for Canopy

Limited Notification for Canopy
  • Location : River Road
  • Council : Hamilton City

The applicant seeks retrospective consent for a canopy that has been established over the existing deck at the rear of the subject site. The canopy is considered to be a building as a result of the height above natural ground level. The building infringes the height in relation to boundary standard for the rear and southern side boundaries. The building is also located within the Waikato Riverbank and Gully Hazard Area as well as the Medium and Low Flood Hazard Areas which cover the rear portion of the subject site. The size of the canopy is 8m by 4.8m and has a curved roof, with a retractable fabric awning.

This was a Limited Notified Application.

Whilst the canopy will after and in some aspects reduce the visual amenity of the Submitters, there is considerable remaining open area to provide for the visual character and amenity. The potential effects are considered to be acceptable. Given the existing planting along the boundary within the site, the potential shading effect is considered to be minimal. The applicant has offered to provide screening around the end of the accessory building to improve the privacy for both the subject site and Submitters. The submitters withdrew their submission on the basis of this offered mitigation.

The proposal is to establish a Service Station with a café/takeaway and industrial service units:

The proposed layout provides parking for 34 cars, including two accessible so easily exceeds the PDP requirement by 12 spaces. One parking bay is also set aside for motorcycles which would accommodate two or three motorcycles, depending on the size of the machines and how they are parked. Given that there is a surplus of 12 parking spaces, it can be reasonably assumed that there will always be space available to park three motorcycles even if not all the designated space.

https://www.facebook.com/SikhSocietyHamilton/videos/1478488518842013/

In 2006 New Zealand was home to more than 9,500 Sikhs, a religious and ethnic community based in the Indian state of Punjab. The first Sikh families came to New Zealand in 1890, mostly from the same local area in central Punjab. The New Zealand Sikh Society was established in 1964. Sikh numbers were very small until the changes to immigration policy in the 1980s. The first Sikh gurudwara (temple) opened in Hamilton in 1997. Seven more gurudwaras were set up in the Auckland area, and others in Tauranga, Te Puke, Hastings, Palmerston North and Wellington. The community has tripled in size since the 1990s, and in 2009 the first South Island centre opened, in Christchurch.Sikhs in New Zealand place a particular emphasis on Anzac Day commemorations, when they remember Sikh combatants at Gallipoli. They are also active in interfaith dialogue.Prominent Sikhs include Sukhi Turner, the mayor of Dunedin from 1999 to 2004, and Kanwal Singh Bakshi, who became the first Sikh MP in 2008.
